Summary of Position

LHR is a non-religious, non-political, non-profit humanitarian organization with the mission of providing dignified immediate and long-term relief to those experiencing displacement. We use a sustainable, participatory approach, that is driven by those we serve.

The Youth Engagement Space (YES) is a youth-friendly drop-in centre where people from the age of 15 years old upwards can engage in unstructured leisure activities as well as structured workshops, including those focusing on arts, writing, music, life skills and sport. It is a safe space in camp for people to come and engage in different activities, receive informal support, talk with a member of the team/their peers, or just have a break from camp life. The YES provides a safe space for young people with the opportunity to engage in meaningful challenges as well as to participate in games and leisure activities in a positive and social environment that welcomes all genders, religions, and ethnicities.

YES targets a demographic whose needs are often overlooked when it comes to humanitarian service provision. Many young people in this age group can be vulnerable to marginalisation which, particularly in the case of young men, increases the risk of exploitation, exposure to violence, and substance abuse. We believe that by offering the young residents of the Ritsona camp access to activities and resources and encouraging participation, teamwork, and curiosity, we can better equip them to work or study when they are resettled.

The YES Intern will be based in Ritsona Camp, Central Greece, and will report directly to the YES Manager.

Ideally, the YES Intern would start by February 2022 and have the ability to stay on as an intern until April 2022 with the possibility of extension.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the planning of the weekly YES programming schedule, coordinating and developing a variety of activities, including workshops, background activities, and long-term projects.

  • Lead and support youth workshops and assist the YES Manager and Facilitator in ensuring a youth-friendly safe drop-in space.

  • Ensure that youth feel comfortable, safe, and respected within the space.

  • Ensure that safeguarding standards are understood and met.

  • Ensure that health and safety incidents are reported.

  • Support the YES Manager and Facilitator in implementing any necessary COVID-19 restrictions to ensure a safe space for everyone.

  • Support the YES Manager and Facilitator to implement training to YES volunteers.

  • Lead the research and design on projects within the youth space, specific projects to be determined. Examples include music recording programs and soft skills training.

  • Where appropriate, assist the YES Manager and Facilitator in outreach to the community.

  • Assist the YES Manager and Facilitator in ensuring the participation of all groups of youth, including vulnerable or isolated youth.

  • Refer any identified protection concerns and gaps in services, to the YES Manager.

  • Assist the YES Manager and Facilitator in youth programme participation tracking.

  • Assist with inventory of YES supplies and ensure equipment is accounted for and stored securely.

Qualifications

Required

  • Degree in International Education, Social Work, Psychology, Arts, or related field.

  • Previous experience working with youth, refugee youth, or vulnerable youth.

  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to live and work in the European Union.

  • Ability to adapt to a multicultural context and work cross-linguistically

  • Good organizational and prioritization skills.

  • Cross-cultural awareness and flexibility.

  • Good organizational skills, interpersonal & communications skills, and efficiency.

  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to changes in programming and or the camp setting.

  • Excellent understanding of and ability to maintain appropriate boundaries with youth and program participants.

  • Working knowledge of Google Drive programs.

Desired

  • Knowledge of Kurdish, Arabic, Farsi and/or French is an asset.

  • Experience in developing and carrying out activities and projects with youth.

  • Prior work experience with an INGO in an emergency setting is preferred.

  • Driving License and ability to drive manual transmission.

Lighthouse Relief will provide the YES Intern with the following;

  • Volunteer contract, fixed-term with 40 hours per week work schedule ;

  • Reimbursement of accommodation expenses of up to €200 or shared accommodation is provided;

  • Shared transportation to/from camp is provided for those living in shared accommodation in Chalkida.
