The UK affiliate office, which this role will lead, is a clear player in this opportunity – to raise the awareness and resources for the provision of emergency and disaster relief work in the hardest to reach places on earth.
Role and Responsibilities
Medair UK is seeking an experienced, dynamic leader to lead the Medair affiliate office in the UK. With a remit to raise vital funds to support the global work of Medair, this individual will lead the team to develop and deliver a fund development strategy.
Reporting directly to the Medair UK board, you will manage the UK staff, made up mostly of the fundraising and communications team, to deliver Medair UK’s strategic goals. You will personally lead on securing and growing relationships with Medair UK’s most significant corporate, foundation, and philanthropy partners. You will work collaboratively with the Global Support Office for Medair and with other affiliate offices. You will also further develop a strategy to cultivate new donors, resulting in robust growth in income to support Medair and its life-saving work assisting the world’s most vulnerable people.
We believe that, building on Medair’s unique approach and global reputation, Medair UK has the opportunity to be a leading go-to organisation to donate to in humanitarian disasters, especially amongst Christian audiences. Medair International has a global fundraising ambition, and the affiliate offices play a key part in it. The purpose of this role is to drive towards this ambition, developing and delivering a strategic plan to build on the current strong growth foundation and further raise annual income over the next three to five years. Leading and developing the team and being responsible for Medair UK’s high net worth individual supporter and donor engagement with the aim of generating significant financial support, is a key part of the role. The Director of the UK Affiliate will ensure that Medair UK’s overarching strategic plan, supported by appropriate annual operating plans align with the Medair International People to People strategy.
You’ll ideally have experience of leading a small to medium organisation, or a departmental team in a larger organisational context and will have a proven track record in leading, developing and managing successful fundraising teams to grow income. You will be an experienced fundraiser who ideally has broad knowledge in a number of fundraising disciplines. In particular you will have a significant background in identifying, cultivating, growing and nurturing relationships with high net worth individuals. You’ll be a compelling verbal and written communicator and have well-developed presentation skills. You will be a skilled manager, an inspirational leader and a collaborator to lead the team effectively and align with the international organisation. You will understand the humanitarian sector, and ideally experience of responding to sudden-onset disasters with immediate and effective fundraising calls to action. You will be creative and a natural problem solver, understanding what motivates people’s generosity and be able to use these skills to engage new and existing Medair UK donors, and grow support and income. You need to be proficient in managing a budget and understanding the nature of restricted and unrestricted funding streams. You must understand UK fundraising regulations, including GDPR and appreciate the use of CRM databases to inform strategy development and to drive income growth. Key Activity Areas
Lead the Medair UK affiliate office, with direct accountability to the Medair UK Board, ensuring compliance with the UK Charity Commission and UK Fundraising Regulation
Plan, oversee, implement and monitor Medair UK’s strategy for engagement with Christian and philanthropic communities in the UK
Provide timely reports to the UK Board and ensure that the Board is able to regularly review major risks and associated opportunities and satisfy itself that systems are in place to take advantage of opportunities whilst managing and mitigating risks
Support the Chairperson to ensure that the Board incorporates the right balance of skills, knowledge and experience needed to govern and lead the charity effectively, and which reflects the diversity of the constituencies we serve
Support the Chairperson in the legal, financial and regulatory requirements to provide effective governance of a UK charity
Lead, support and develop a culture of excellence at Medair UK, ensuring that Medair UK realises its full potential with the Christian audience as a leader in humanitarian response
Responsible to the board for setting, managing and reporting on the budget, ensuring healthy reserves are maintained
Collaborate effectively and maintain a strong relationship with the Global Support Office (GSO), particularly the Fundraising Communications teams and CEO.
Maintain strong, collaborative relationships with other Affiliate Office leaders, working with them to share ideas and identify cross-border income generating opportunities
Overall responsibility for the UK office including operational, financial and HR responsibilities, with management support from the Resources Manager
Effectively manage and lead the UK staff team, maintaining and enhancing the Christian life, health and wellbeing of Medair UK and the Medair UK team
Partner with like-minded organisations where appropriate to enhance income generating opportunities and communications channels
Lead the advancement of a 3-5-year growth strategy.
Develop Medair UK’s fundraising strategy and annual plan, delivering year on year growth across all income streams with a particular emphasis on unrestricted regular income
Ensure all donor and supporter groups have identified supporter journeys and engagement plans, which link to the annual fundraising plan
Plan and deliver fundraising campaigns with all supporter groups, fully utilising the resources of the team in the execution of each campaign
Monitor fundraising performance, providing regular segmented reports on target versus actual and other key fundraising metrics, and use these reports to inform ongoing fundraising activity
Develop appropriate fundraising products, systems, processes and approaches to enhance the supporter experience, whilst ensuring that all are compliant with current fundraising regulations and codes of best practice
Lead, manage and work with direct reports to develop their respective specialism and capabilities to improve their effectiveness at engaging with Medair UK’s supporters
Ensure best practice and integration of all giving channels with Medair UK’s CRM, salesforce.org, including online giving
Build and manage internal and external networks to assist in identification, cultivation and solicitation of donors
With the team, ensure donor engagement plans are implemented and that donors receive excellent and timely communications, including thanking and follow up to ensure continued support
Graduate existing donors towards higher value giving and legacy giving
Ensure alignment of Medair UK’s High Net Worth Individual Donor strategy with the overarching Medair UK strategy and the Medair People to People strategy
Liaise with Medair colleagues with responsibility for High Net Worth Individual Fundraising in Switzerland and other Medair affiliate offices, to share best practice and inform the development of Medair UK’s engagement with High Net Worth Individuals in the UK.
Maintain awareness and understanding of the UK charity landscape and Medair UK’s position within it**
Assess Medair UK’s USP’s and use this information to identify target audiences to engage with on an ongoing basis
Oversee the development, implementation, management and review of Medair UK’s communications plan, with a particular emphasis on digital communications activity
Ensure the Medair UK webpages and the Medair website delivers a high-quality user experience and that potential financial supporters can donate easily and efficiently
Oversee the development, production and distribution of Medair UK’s engagement products, e.g. Medair News, Medair Prayer, ensuring they are available in various formats including digitally
Oversee Medair UK’s representation and presence on key Christian media channels and ensuring maximum visibility and engagement
Ensure Medair UK has a dynamic presence across a range of social media platforms, with clear engagement pathways and calls to action related to fundraising.
Tasks common to all staff
Act as an ambassador for Medair UK at all times when liaising externally and internally
Ensure consistent implementation of the Medair brand across all relevant activities
Represent Medair at events as required
Record information as necessary and comply at all times with requirements for handling personal / sensitive data
Contribute to the annual planning and budgeting cycle, providing appropriate input from your area of responsibility
Qualifications – DESIRABLE
Recognised professional Fundraising, Marketing and/or Communications qualification, ideally at Masters Level or equivalent.
Excellent English (spoken and written). French is desirable but not essential.

This is a full-time position based in Kennington, SW London with possible UK travel and travel to Switzerland. There is some flexibility to work from home/adopt hybrid working when appropriate within the team dynamic

Salary: £60,000 to £65,000 per annum
