Action Against Hunger-USA is part of the Action Against Hunger International network, which provides humanitarian relief in over 40 countries worldwide in the sectors of nutrition, health, water/sanitation, and food security. Action Against Hunger-USA, an independent NGO, currently manages operations in 8 countries: Kenya, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Somalia and Haiti. Action Against Hunger-USA has over $110 million in programs, and approximately 1,700 staff based in the various country offices and New York City, Washington D.C and Horn and East Africa Regional Office in Nairobi. Additional growth is anticipated.
The Research Coordinator will be responsible for managing all research projects. The Research Coordinator is the main contact person for all studies undertaken by Action Against Hunger South Sudan. Support the technical design and implementation of field-level activities as guided by Study Protocols, Field Manuals, and Standard Operating Procedures in close collaboration with the PI and Head of Departments.
This position will be supervised by the Health and Nutrition Head of Department. This position will also engage with the Technical Advisory Group formed.
Key activities in your role will include:
Recruit, onboard and directly supervise research staff such as Research Associates and Field Managers and manage transitions in order to maintain institutional memory of project activities.
Coordinate closely with Field research coordinator (when available) and Program Mangers in Action Against Hunger South Sudan to advise them in the design on staffing structures, data collection tools adaption to local context, and other context-specific decision-making to ensure the protocol can be implemented correctly in each context
Oversee quality assurance, data cleaning, data analysis and other activities related to rigorous research as outlined in each project study design.
Ensure continued engagement with all study stakeholders during the implementation process. This can be through in person/remote meetings, email updates, briefings amongst other identified.
Ensure each research has a study brief/infographic ready to share with various stakeholders a study overview.
Following lessons and study findings, support the development of new projects by establishing relationships with researchers, implementers and funders, and developing opportunities and proposals.
Ensure each study uptake strategy is outlined at study inception and followed up at study close out based on findings.
At least a master’s degree from an accredited college or university in a major such as nutrition/health or social science.
3-5 years of experience in multi-sectoral research projects, including experience in research related to Gender-based Violence and 2 years experience in South Sudan preferable.
Experience organizing and participating in field-level data collection as part of a research study or program monitoring and evaluation.
Excellent research skills, knowledge of quantitative data collection and analysis methods, strong experience ensuring data quality.
Experience working in and/or overseeing the implementation of nutrition sensitive and nutrition specific programming.
Training in and proven knowledge around nutrition sensitive and nutrition specific programming in low-income countries;
Microsoft office suite with appropriate research skills including, for example, use of statistical packages (Experience with mobile data collection tools (e.g. Kobo) and data analysis software (e.g., Stata) (preferred but not required).
Excellent demonstrated organizational and managerial ability, prior experience managing a diverse team required.
Ability to interact with donor agencies, research and field partners, other international, national and local actors in country.
Excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to work both independently and as a member of a team.
