The research will test the assumption that a more integrated urban space in Wau will provide a better space for a resilient community in and around the city. That will include consideration of how the community dynamics of the surrounding payams and how circumstances there affect relations within the town. This research should create a greater understanding as to how the city space is used by different communities and how that affects conflict dynamics. The research will provide evidence and specific recommendations that can be used to design programming that is cognizant of the specific dynamics of the urban environment in Wau and can provide a better foundation for returns, and integration under the principles of durable solutions.

The research should build on previous research that has looked at how competing identities (Vyulsteke, 2018), land governance (Deng et al., 2019; Deng et al. 2021) and urban violence, criminality and gender (Luedke, 2020) play a role in defining how space is viewed and used in Wau.
