LHR is a non-religious, non-political, non-profit humanitarian organization with the mission of providing dignified immediate and long-term relief to those experiencing displacement. We use a sustainable, participatory approach, that is driven by those we serve.

Ritsona Refugee Long Term Accommodation Center is a refugee camp near Chalkida, 60km north-east of Athens, Greece, that currently hosts approximately 3000 asylum seekers and refugees, 45% of whom are minors.

Since 2016, LHR has been running a Child Friendly Space in Ritsona, and has since also started other programmes, such as a Youth Engagement Space, a Sports Programme and a Resident Volunteer Programme.

Our Child Friendly Space (CFS) is a safe place where children can learn through play and regain a sense of normality in the midst of difficult circumstances. Over the years, the CFS has catered to a variety of age groups ranging from 3 to 10 years old. Currently, the CFS is focused on 3 and 4 year-old children, who have no other psychosocial support or recreational activities in the camp at this time.

Position Summary

The Child Friendly Space Intern will support the CFS Manager and Facilitator in providing children of ages 3-4 within Ritsona camp, Central Greece, with a secure space where they are able to play, socialize, learn and express themselves in a structured and free-flowing environment.

Key responsibilities

  • Supervise and support all CFS activities under the guidance of CFS manager and CFS Facilitator;

  • Support the planning and development of daily programming with the CFS Manager and Facilitator;

  • Ensure that children feel comfortable, safe, and respected;

  • Ensure that safeguarding standards and Child Protection Policy are understood and met;

  • Ensure that health and safety incidents are reported through formal channels;

  • Daily overview of the attendance of children and program monitorings with CFS staff team;

  • Oversee and assistance in the training of CFS volunteers, whilst ensuring they are following the LHR Code of Conduct;

  • Ensure the maintenance and safety of CFS materials;

  • Assist in community outreach to encourage participation of all children including new arrivals and those most vulnerable;

  • Report any child protection concerns or identified gaps to the CFS Manager;

  • Support CFS team in the development and implementation of the MEAL Plan and MEAL Plan’s tools.

As the responsibilities listed here cannot be exhaustive, the position holder may be required to undertake other duties that are broadly in line with the above key responsibilities.



  • minimum age 23 years

  • Bachelor or Master’s degree in education, psychology, child development, international development studies, international relations, human rights, social work or a related field

  • Previous experience working with children

  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment

  • High level of flexibility

  • Ability to adapt to a culturally diverse context and work cross-linguistically

  • Good level of English

  • Minimum expected commitment: February 2022 to April 2022

  • Ability to live and work in the European Union.


  • Prior work experience with an INGO

  • Arabic / Kurdish / Farsi / French language skills

  • Project management and monitoring experience

  • Manual driving license


  • Volunteer contract, fixed-term with 40 hours per week work schedule ;

  • Reimbursement of accommodation expenses of up to €200 or shared accommodation is provided;

  • Shared transportation to/from camp is provided for those living in shared accommodation in Chalkida.
