Organisation Background

Founded in 2011, the International NGO Safety Organisation (INSO) is an international NGO that supports humanitarian aid workers by establishing safety coordination platforms in insecure contexts. INSO provides registered NGOs with a range of free services, including real-time incident tracking, analytical reports, safety-related data and mapping, crisis management support, staff orientations and training.

INSO provides daily support to more than 1000 NGOs operating in 18 of the world’s most insecure countries. INSO services help NGOs with their day-to-day risk management responsibilities and improve their overall situational awareness to support evidence-based humanitarian access decisions.

INSO is registered in the Netherlands with its headquarters based in The Hague, the international city of peace and justice.

Job Summary

Established in 2019, the Global Communications Manager (GCM) post is responsible for bringing our story to the world by capturing and communicating our impact and raising awareness of our work in support of humanitarian safety.

With a good foundation in place, the GCM will continue to build communication activities that engage and inform stakeholders including NGOs, our donors, related and peer entities, host governments and others such as academics and researchers.

Support for fundraising, general brand recognition and media coverage are important but secondary considerations.

The post offers an exciting opportunity to help shape and define a department that remains in its early stages as well as to explore innovative approaches to communications in a modern, data driven and field-focused humanitarian organisation. This position reports to the Executive Director and manages the Web Designer & Developer.

Health regulations permitting, there will be the opportunity for field travel and for broad engagement across the organisation and its partners.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Strategy and Analytics (10%)

* Work with senior management to drive the development and delivery of INSO’s Communications Strategy, including identifying key audiences, messages and objectives.

* Generate regular analytics reports to track metrics and progress against the strategy.

Channel Management (30%)

* Actively manage INSO’s social media presence to promote a wider understanding of our mission and impact; deliver and reinforce key messages.

* Ensure INSO’s new website (launching soon) is kept up to date; regularly create general and targeted content to engage and inform intended audiences.

* Work with the Designer and Developer to continue to develop INSO’s website in line with industry standards, INSO strategy and audience needs.

* Lead INSO’s participation in global campaigns and initiatives including World Humanitarian Day.

Content, Messaging and Impact Reporting (35%)

* Work with management and MEL staff to develop key messaging around the organisation’s mission and impact.

* Work across the organisation to identify, collect and present impact case studies, testimonials, success stories and other impact outcomes for a variety of stakeholders and channels.

* Lead the production and publication of the Annual Impact Report, utilising case studies, testimonials, and graphics to present INSO’s impact throughout the year.

* Manage INSO’s multi-media library and gather new materials both directly and through freelancers.

Media (5%)

* Monitor INSO media coverage and develop and manage relations with humanitarian reporters, news outlets and publications.

* Serve as global focal point for media contact and prepare press statements when requested and support other staff in dealing with the media.

External Engagement and Brand Management (15%)

* Seek opportunities to promote and advance awareness of, and support for, INSO’s mission and impact, particularly through engagement and donor’s communications departments.

* Provide and support internal and external events, webinars, briefings and presentations as needed.

* Work with the Information Manager to create brochures, leaflets, flyers, posters, info-packs, etc. as needed.

* Support HR with staff stories and profiles to promote INSO as a good place of work.

* Maintain up to date awareness of key donor communications, branding and marketing policies, updating colleagues where changes occur.

* Provide advice to HQ and Country Office teams to ensure brand consistency.

Internal Communications (5%)

* Draft periodic bulletin coordinating with all HQ departments and country teams to identify relevant information and news to share

Knowledge, Skills and Experience


* Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in communications, journalism, marketing, media or related field (English, liberal arts, etc)

* Minimum of 5 years of professional experience and proven track record in organisational communications (or marketing) – ideally with prior experience in the humanitarian, philanthropy or development fields.

* Experience of advising senior leadership in identifying and communicating impact.

* Good understanding of main humanitarian actors – NGOs, UN, donors, etc. – and their various interests, profiles and activities.

* Exemplary English writing and editorial skills.

* Understanding of Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.)

* Experience with WordPress/similar content management systems

* Experience collecting content in dynamic environments and managing freelance photographers

* Good understanding of modern communication and marketing trends, technologies and platforms

Nice to Have:

* Knowledge of French or Arabic

* Knowledge of INSO and its services & function.

Terms & Conditions:

Fixed-term (renewable) full-time contract based in The Hague, Netherlands, €6000 per month, 8% vacation pay (vakentiegeld), 2.5 days annual leave per month, month, global medical coverage (excluding USA) and USD $200,000 AD&D coverage.

This position qualifies for a Highly Skilled Migrant visa and relocation allowance.
